easy technology--good or bad?

consumer electronics that connect to computers (digital cameras, printers, mp3 players, etc.) are becoming easier to install. they're designed to be installed and configured (to some extent) by adults who didn't grow up in the technology age. for people like me, who provide computer-related support to family members, that is both good and bad.
at first, it appears all good. i don't have to run to someone's house when they get a new external hard drive or printer, because it's likely they can plug in the usb cable and install the necessary software without my help. i only have to be brought in to write a backup script or change ink cartridges.
so what's the problem? less work for me. that's it. but then i thought, do i really want these people to have that power? then i lose the computer-dominant hold on them. that kind of thought probably makes me seem like a selfish asshole. i'm more like rick burns from snl/mad tv (i get those confused, but come to think of it, it's probably from snl because mad tv isn't funny)--i help out, and i'm really happy to, but i do it with his attitude... which sounds worse on paper than it actually is.
